Both Stiles and Scott whirled around, clutching one another as they involuntarily let out, for lack of a better word, unmanly squeals.
“Danny!” Scott’s voice cracked. “What—” he paused to clear his throat and try again. “What are you doing here?”
Stiles, quick to get over his shock upon seeing how harmless their newest companion was, chose to keep his attention on Scott. “Dude, did you just scream?” His hands slowly slipped away from their grip around Scott’s shoulders.
Scott opened his mouth to deny everything, only to notice he was still holding onto his friend. He quickly let go.
“You screamed, too.”
“Yeah, but you’re the were—” Both boys cast a glance at the third party member. “What are you doing here, Danny?” Stiles asked, giving Scott a not-so-subtle punch to the pectoral.
“I’m here to help,” Danny finally answered after looking between the two misfits for several seconds.
“Help?” Stiles’ chuckle sounded so forced that even Scott winced. “We don’t — we don’t need any help, do we Scott?”
Scott nodded his head then shook it, as if unsure as to which answer would be right in the context. “Yeah, ‘cause were not doing anything.”
Danny’s face fell into an expression he normally only reserved for Stiles. “Jackson’s bite is finally taking hold and he’s gone off the deep end and your alpha is tied up elsewhere. Am I right so far?”
Scott’s jaw dropped and Stiles’ laugh turned somewhat painful to listen to.
“We have no idea what you’re talking about. What makes you think all that? Cause that just sounds like — like crazy talk!” Stiles crossed his arms, his smile still plastered on his face.
“I overhear the two of you nearly every day in Chemistry. It’s not like you guys try very hard to be quiet about it. I’m surprised the majority of the school doesn’t already know.”
Stiles nodded, his smile melting into a grimace as his arm lashed out to punch Scott once more.
“Ow. Dude! It’s kind of your fault, too, you know!”
“Let me help!” Danny pleaded. ” He’s my best friend — I know I can bring Jackson back!”
Scott shook his head. “No. No way,” he insisted as even Stiles turned a pleading glance his way. “Jackson’s gone feral. The situation is dangerous enough without Derek here. We can’t let an innocent bystander in just because he overheard us talking in class! He has no idea what to do in this kind of situation and I don’t want a repeat of the last time we got locked in the building.”
“Come on, Scott!” Stiles cajoled. “It’s not like he’s Allison and going to freak out and not want to date you anymore! He might even be useful! Like, on a scale of Allison to me, I’d say he’d be like…Lydia-useful.”
“Wait, Allison knows, too?” Danny asked.
Scott’s smile was nauseating. “Yeah…”
Stiles scoffed and waved a dismissive arm. “No. She’s living so deep in the land of denial I’m surprised she hasn’t developed a tan.” His gaze turned distant. “With super sexy tan lines…”
Both Scott and Danny rolled their eyes, but still took enough pity to not interrupt the poor boy from his helpless fantasy.
“Look, would it help if I said I’ve done my research?”
“Prove it,” Scott ordered after exchanging a glance with Stiles.
A stack of papers was held up, yellow streaks of highlighter nearly glowing in the dimmed light.
“You…highlighted everything,” Scott pointed out as he squinted at the papers.
Danny shrugged. “It all seemed pretty important.”
“Dude,” Stiles voice was nearly reverent. “How are we not soulmates?”
“So…am I in?”
“Heck yeah, you’re in!” Stiles stated enthusiastically, his smile genuine as he smacked Scott a third time for luck.
Groaning, Scott turned and continued to lead the hunt, deciding he was placing the blame squarely on Stiles when Derek showed up and demanded to know why Danny was there.
